Forest School

St. Mary’s Primary School in Mucklestone have for many years offered ‘Forest School’.  The children from Reception and Key Stage 1 participate in this fun and exciting activity in blocks of a few weeks every term.

Forest School originates from Scandinavia; where up until school entry at the age of 6 kindergarten children attended a Forest School; basically an outdoor classroom where the curriculum was delivered in a less formal, more engaging and more motivating setting.

The trained Forest School leader plans activities to develop all aspects of a child’s formal education; linking it to school based learning if appropriate.  Social, personal and emotional development is also a key focus for the activities.  However the session is flexible enough to be adapted to meet individual’s needs or interests as experiences arise.

Forest school happens whatever the weather, children are taught to take risks in a safe and controlled environment (using tools and lighting fires) and a review session is an integral part of the experience where the children and staff share their thoughts about the session.

Feedback from children and parents has so far been very positive “it’s the best thing,” parent of a Foundation Stage and Year 2 child.  “Forest school is really fun,” Foundation Stage child and “I can’t wait for Forest School,” Year 1 child.
