Gifted and Talented

  • At St Mary's we cater for children with different ability levels. It is important that we develop all learners so they can achieve their best. We do this by providing exciting learning  contexts and differentiated work within lessons. We match the content and expectation to children's abilities

  • We give all children the opportunity to follow their interests, to suggest projects and to make real contribution to the life of our school.

The school has recently started 'Learning Zone' - see below. Children are encouraged to study beyond the school curriculum, to think about future careers and to work independently on subjects that captivate their interest. The school encourages and supports these interests. We want our pupils to be aspirational and forward thinking.

We also support our more able mathematicians by arranging for them to attend maths lessons at our local high school once a month.

Children develop leadership skills by organising clubs, charity fundraising events and leading collective worship.

    Learning Zone

  • Children have the opportunity to join our own ‘in school university’ to enable them to work on a project that interests them – it could be anything. It is a way of raising their aspiration. It caters for our gifted and talented pupils and those who enjoy being busy and enjoy learning. Our children are going to be successful; the doctors, teachers, accountants, engineers and scientists of the future and this thirst for knowledge can be kindled at an early age. The Children’s University has been around in schools for many years and it is something we have wanted to start for some time. The club is completley voluntary and held after school hours.  Mrs Dicks runs the club and holds after school sessions when children can use our school computers and library to work on their projects. Mrs Dicks will be the guide on the side - not a teacher. The idea is that children take ownership for their own learning.  Your child will tell you all about it if they want to join in.
